NDH tf2 community map project
« on: 03 March 2009, 20:33:33 »
This is a project were we from NDH makes a map. We share our ideas mix them and find out what map we will be making. Then we hand the task over to the concept/level designer to make a map design we are all pleased with. Then we go over to the part were the mappers start sdk and make the map.

When you say it's a 'community map', do you mean this map will be only for our use, or to advertise our community?

First of all. A map that we will play together.
Maybe it could end up in a advertising thing. i dunno XD

This community needs a boost, especially the servers. But if it is only played on the private server, what's the point?

Too bad it won't be done in time for the gaming night.

I think it could be put on the "cp" server or something if it gets fun and good :)
Then we could let the masses play our map ;)

There's that whole map-downloading problem again, there. But hey, that isn't my area at all xD
I guess this is where people start to throw up ideas?

Rest the picture itself explains.
Take a look and say what u mean about it :D

Why a "fun map"? I'm having fun on a well-built, well-balanced CP map!

Anyway... I used to do some mapping a couple of years ago. (yes that is a hint I could get back to it again)

First of all, you need ideas. Draw them on a piece of paper, think how you could implement them into the map and how they will work.
Art style is important, especially in a game like TF2. CP_Egypt is a good example about this - say what you say, but I don't really think the style of it fits TF2.
You need a layout as well. Ideas - even those good ones - won't make a good map themselves. Where do the players start? Where are the chokepoints? How many different routes do you have? Water? Objects?

I have been thinking about a hilly map. Yes, there's Badlands, but something with the style of Lumberyard - a map in the Alps, perhaps?
I say this, be ye redy with good hert
To al my wil, and that I frely may
As me best pleaseth do you laughe or smert,
And never ye to murmur, night or day;
And eek whan I say yea, ye say not nay,
Neyther by word, nor frownyng countenaunce?
Swer this, and here I swer our alliaunce.

Because we are no professional mappers. Making a "well-built, well-balanced" map from scratch might be too hard.
But we could give it a shot I guess.

I was just about suggest a remake of a popular map like StinkyCheese said.

Alpine maps are awesome! I really love Lumberyard.  :D

Double post

Now we are getting this thing started! The idea is an alpine/lumberyard map with caves and open areas. Additional mappers are very welcome.

Additional explanations and more pics will arrive later today.

I must say, The concept drawing is pretty impressive. just make sure to acknowledge every class and give them advantage/disadvantages in some areas. Like, tight packed areas for pyro and long areas for snipers. Some lovely little hovels and cliffs for FaN scouts and rocket/sticky jumping.

IMO, I dont think a cp should be in a corner. defenders need to be rushing in from all areas to succesfully avoid capture by the attackers, and vice versa . But Thats just me

I've never mapped, and I dont plan to start now, but I'd love to help any way I can.
