Expanding to a commercial game?
« on: 05 June 2008, 11:24:13 »
As all the clan members know, we might expand into Battlefield Heroes in future. However, BFH seems to have a couple of drawbacks.

  • Electronic Arts keeps the server business to themselves.
This means that we cannot run a dedicated server from our own host. Instead of that, we should buy a server directly from EA. They have said that the servers will be relatively cheap, but I doubt that this will happen.

  • BFH won't have a server browser.
Instead of that, the game will feature a friends list alongside with clan stats, little minipages for clans, etc. I have strong feelings that it won't work for the masses though.

  • Expected release date is in Q3 2008.
This is way too late for our clan.

At the moment NDH is not playing any games as a clan. This must change soon. Otherwise this clan is not going to be interesting to anyone.

So what is my point? Just like it says in the title, we should expand to a commercial game. We all bought (hopefully?) Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas without knowing about its multiplaying features. Now we are here, and we got to move on.

So far I have received these ideas: (games, which have a strikethrough in their title, won't be considered)

  • Battlefield 2 with Project Reality modification
  • Supreme Commander
  • SWAT 4
  • Counter Strike
  • Operation Flashpoint
  • C&C game
  • Call of Duty 4

And also some free games:

  • America's Army
  • Trackmania Nations Forever

Modifications:

  • San Andreas Multiplayer
  • Multi Theft Auto

Thanks for reconsidering America's Army. I would be happy to play BF2/AA/TMNF, but I really don't know much of Supreme Commander.

For Supreme Commander, you need a BIG PC (BIG = multicore). TMNF is always good, but we need to get our server active with nice tracks (firebrand, stuff like that), and we must race there.

I will always be playing Americas Army, though i am in a dedicated AA clan. Doesn't matter, cause i could play with you guys, only not with the same clantag. (Username: -=[Killzone.C4 > Also on Tracker)

I agree that we have to choose a new game now. It's been too long since we played together and BFH won't be ready in the near future.

I think Supcom is a bit to heavy, I don't know the rigs of every member, but I don't think everyone will be able to run it.

Americas Army is a nice game. Not to heavy and it's 'clan friendly'.

Trackmania is a nice game too, but I think it's not suitable for a clan because there is no teamwork involved.

BF2 is a funny game. With it's squad system it's perfect for teams and clans. However, the last time I checked the battlefields, they were crowded with granade spamming morons being Rambo. Still, a nice game and I would like to try it with some members sometime.

When I was still playing BF2, my 'dream' was to have a great team with a superb commander and usefull squads someday.... perhaps that dream will come true  :P

Downside of BF2 is that it's not very realistic, although I've never tried the Project Reality mod so it might be better.

I dug up some old topics and here are some more suggestions:
  • SWAT4
  • Counter Strike
  • Operation Flashpoint
  • BF2142
  • a C&C game
  • samp ::)

Oh, and Overkill: nice sig ;)

there are only a few problems with certain games.

  • SWAT4
- this game sucks online, i've encountered several cheaters and there are no tactics online
  • Counter Strike
- never played, no opinion.
  • Operation Flashpoint
- really no one plays this game no-more.
  • BF2142
tbh, this sucks
  • a C&C game
no opinion.
  • samp ::)
we've played this long enough and 99% is bored of this game

we've got far enough reason for SA-MP, it's not even in the eventual games list...
Btw, i'm ok for CS, BF2 and AA (never played C&C, though as it's RTS, i'll love it)

and it seems everyone agrees on C&C as commercial (or not... ::) ) and AA on free game :)

SA-MP has one drawback:

lack of fun. Every single rock in the area of San Andreas has already been turned. I have even fell in the grave that Hernandez was supposed to be buried. Can it offer anything anymore? :-\

EDIT:

As of Thursday, 9.47 PM (GMT)...

SA-MP has got 1573 servers. 1035 of these are empty... leaving 548 servers which are crowded.

... access violation. >:(

And that's relevant because ...?

Anyway, if you really want to reconsider SA:MP then why not reconsider MTA? In my opinion it's more of a success than SA:MP ever was.

Multi Theft Auto DM is still a beta. Plus, we would need a custom gamemode...

The fact is that SA-MP is better in terms of gameplay, but MTA has a lot better sync and has more possibilities. It has a lack of players though; I assume that with frequent updates MTA would have killed every other GTA multiplayer mod. (SA-MP can be critizised just as well.)

On a sidenote, I have no bloody idea why we are travelling a circle in the jungle again. We left GTA multiplaying, now we're heading back? ??? My personal opinion is that we should play a real game, not a modification.

However, if someone is ready to take up on either mod, make a custom gamemode to it (note: Supercup can not be used yet - I have the source, but it needs massive edits in code), administrate the servers, recruit new, long-time members... I'm OK with that.

But at the same time I also want to secure Northern Dawn Heroes' future by expanding into a proper game. I'm not going to let all of this drop down.

Opinions, opinions...
