The current state of TF2
« on: 05 January 2011, 04:32:46 »

How's TF2 these days? Is it still fun? Is it enjoyable? Has it taken a turn to worse with the recent additions, such as Mann Co. store?
I say this, be ye redy with good hert
To al my wil, and that I frely may
As me best pleaseth do you laughe or smert,
And never ye to murmur, night or day;
And eek whan I say yea, ye say not nay,
Neyther by word, nor frownyng countenaunce?
Swer this, and here I swer our alliaunce.

TF2 used to be a game that you could be proud to say you play. Lately, though, Valve has only been disappointing me. Disregarding the Jan 3 update (an applause to Valve for actually adding something useful for once), the update history since the Polycount pack has been dismal.
As I post this, there are 135 different hats and 21 different colours for each. The decision to monetize on TF2, even though it could be considered justified after the years of free updates, seems like a last-ditch effort, and it's looking like TF2 is nearing the end of its life for me.

Nonetheless, the gameplay is enjoyable but I wouldn't mind a transition into another game.

I had fun, but I'm guessing it's time to move on. The game itself feels bastardized with all the item craze. I don't even know what I'm playing.

I agree alot with Foozy, but finding a game that can replace the gameplay of TF2, seems rather impossible to me. So as of now, I still like and enjoy TF2, but think it is going in the wrong direction.

Counter Strike: Source is fun indeed, but it has a steep learning curve.

Agreed with Deo, Fooz and Grid. I'm not sure where to go from TF2, I can't think of any other game quite like it.

I wish to make this statement with regards to one particular complaint these days:

The Enrichment Center reminds you that the Mann Co. Supply Crate will never order you to buy a key and open it and, in fact, cannot speak.  In the event that the Supply Crate does speak, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice.

I'm personally still fine with TF2.  All right, so it's a bit more complex with the different weapons and the introductions of sets, but it's still the same somewhat insane shooter it's always been, and it still feels rather balanced.

That said, a "Spamming trading messages" option for reasons for kicking players on the server may be in order... possibly along with "Truly atrocious trade offers". :P

I personally believe TF2 is now a mere hollow shell of what it once was.

The game used to be a quirky shooter set in the 60's, with secret espionage bases, weapons and characters that fit that criteria. It was not about fighting pumpkin monsters and exchanging exotic headwear.

Valve seemed to forget this abit in the updates.

The original assets are still the most charming to me.

Take the Scout's bat for example, it looks like it was really made for him. This was enforced by the team logo being printed on it in the beta trailers. So I think it's safe to assume that it was handed to him by the secret organisation he works for, RED or BLU. And what kind of secret organisation would hand out fish for their mercenaries to fight with?

I shouldn't even have to tell you how most hats are worse. It was like Valve went to the most nationalistic flea market in the neighbourhood and bought the most outrageous and crazy hats they could find to model into the game. And I think the team (the characters, that is. Well, maybe Valve too) is losing a great deal of their professionality and their personalities. It just pains me to see a Heavy running around with a glowing/burning/whatever umbrella on his head. It totally kills the mood for me.

Even TF2's totally amazing humor has dropped a great deal.

Take 2fort. 2fort is a secret spybase in the middle of the desert poorly disguised as a farm and an industrial building.
"Happy Farmers Cooperative" was the best name they could come up with for a front. Outside of the "farm" there are flat wooden cows to make the farm look like a legit farm and totally not a secret underground base.

That is funny.

Way funnier than anything Saxton Hale has ever done.

With that said, I have been playing Starcraft 2 a lot lately, and I enjoy it.
Some people say less is more, but I say less is less, more is more and ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

If I had to rant up a few games I could see myself playing on an NDH server, or playing with other NDH members..
TrackMania Nations/United, Minecraft, Garry's Mod, Diablo 3 (When it comes out), Brink (Also when it comes out).. There's rumours that the old Hellgate London is going to be re-released soon, which was a fun game even when Flagship Studios were defunct, leaving the multiplayer option not working, so I'd be more than happy to play that with other NDH members.

Any of you ever played avp2? If you fancy trying it out, I have the full install cd's and can host a server, and best of all, the game is now free, so don't worry about software piracy:P

Valve originally said that the free updates made sense as whenever they did it, loads more people bought TF2 through word of mouth about the updates.

My guess is that this has stopped being the case and the store is a last ditch effort to keep the game and its free updates cost-effective for the company.

Basically TF2 is on its last legs.  As soon as people stop buying items, there will be no more TF2 updates and very little support as Valve will have to move onto something else.

I don't think Valve or most of the people playing really wanted to become about a store that they needed people to buy from to support the game but that is what it has come down to.  I think Valve want to keep it alive as long as possible though.  For that they should be commended as it shows loyalty to the community that they have done everything possible to keep supporting the game for as long as possible.

I still enjoy playing the game, I will happily admit I've bought stuff from the store (then again someone gave me TF2 for free so I can't really moan), but it's just money raking these days. The trading is useful in some respects, but annoying in other times since people keep advertising "trading v. dispenser" which irritates me after a while.

I will agree TF2 has lost it's way a bit. Some of the hats and the like are annoying. Some of the weapons are irritating as well. It's a bit of a mixture between old and new and it's pffft.

I can see TF2 still going for the next couple of years, but they need to stop deviating from the original game. In some ways I'm glad the XBOX version of TF2 isn't updated.

Is it just me or are they not even trying to balance the weapons these days.

I mean a sword that restores full health on kill is ridiculous.
