Minecraft server?
« on: 20 December 2010, 21:20:23 »
Ladies and Gentleman, I present to you a very simple concept.
I think NDH should get a Minecraft server.

"What is Minecraft?", I hear you asking. Well, aren't you goshdarned predictable.

Minecraft is pretty much a giant sandbox game to live out all of those LEGO fantasies you just didn't have enough blocks to create. In Minecraft, you spawn in a randomly generated world 8 times the surface area of earth, completely defenseless bar your tiny, square fists. Use your surroundings to your advantage, mining and crafting items to help you survive, because at night, your nightmares materialize ( if you have nightmares of spiders, zombies, skeletons or exploding, green, hissing .. things ). During the day, you use your gathered materials to build magnificent creations.

There's also multiplayer creative mode, devoid of all scary things, for you to build whatever the shoot you please.

Take a look at this site for some really incredible creations.

So yes, back to the point. Vote in the poll and ask questions and comment in the thread.

Aslong as we are running survival Beta I think it would be a great idea, Also It would help to attract more members.

As a side note, i have been on AT's minecraft server and it seems to have worked quite well for them

Yes, but we also need some anti-griefing measures. So our server doesn't end up firebombed and crater'd like it happened to Polycount. And it HAD some mighty nice tree structures. Just warnin'
Maybe a building/mining whitelist, so you can get on the server, but you can only walk around and admire things if you're not whitelisted.

If the whitelist was tied to the site, so you have to be in NDH to be able to build on the server. And a backup of the map made automaticaly atleast every 24 hours so we can roll back if needed.

If it operates along the lines of steam, and you can add servergroups etc (such as steamgroups, or even tying the server into checking a website), that should not be a problem, but seeing as I have not looked into it... As to rolling the server back, again it's down to how the server is hosted and maintains contact with a central server, if it is purely server side, then it should not be a problem, if it's maintained on a linux server, a cron job would take care of a automatic backup:)

Now, I don't know much about running Minecraft servers and running servers at all. I have no idea what is the best server software for, nor which was used by the servers I was playing on, but I did some searching and it seems that MCAdmin could be useful to run our server. It has a bunch of useful features, amongst which are ranks and map autobackup. If you'd like to read more, here are the links: Minecraft forum thread and Offcial page/wiki

Done a bit more looking and I think that hMod would be even better than MCAdmin. Actually I'm a little tempted to try hosting something myself, though with my connection it's a rather bad idea.
hMod has lots of useful functions and and can use plugins which there are tons of, making it way more flexible than standard Minecraft server.

I'd host if I felt comfortable with having my computer run 24/7.
Might be able to get a laptop on the cheap for it, though. Might being the keyword.

I pretty much have stopped playing Tf2 but I'd love to get involved with NDH again if there was a minecraft server.

I'm borrowing a Friends account but I cant find any good servers at all

Jsut thought I'd let you know, I'm currently twinkering with hMod. If it looks like it's working properly, I'd be happy hosting it whenever my computer is running as long as it's not using too much resources- If need be, I'll just ask people to leave so I can shut it down, but I doubt it'll go that far.

EDIT: It's giving me the same exact errors SMP did a few months back. I've done troubleshooting and googling the errors for over an hour trying different solutions and nothing, like last time I tried, seems to work. I'm giving up, at least for today.

So who actually owns a copy of the game?

NDH needs to expand to another game - preferably sooner than later.
I say this, be ye redy with good hert
To al my wil, and that I frely may
As me best pleaseth do you laughe or smert,
And never ye to murmur, night or day;
And eek whan I say yea, ye say not nay,
Neyther by word, nor frownyng countenaunce?
Swer this, and here I swer our alliaunce.
