Mini Gaming Nights
« on: 21 October 2010, 00:52:24 »
So yhea! Hree we aer, frist nimi namigg nitgh abuot ot be deon. *Ahem*
So yeah! First mini gaming night. First up for play is, drumroll please;

JailBreak: Source

JailBreak: Source is a small, unknown mod that is, none the less, loved by those who play it, and even then it's only played very occasionally. It gives you classic team deathmatch gameplay with a twist; Whenever you kill a member of the opposing team, they are moved to your team's jail. Every jail has a release switch, opposing members can attempt to sneak into your base and hit the switch, upon which the members you have jailed are set free. Some jails also have intricate, elaborate escape routes that you can try to escape through, but most are tricky enough that you have to put in real effort to get through. If you die, you'll just respawn in the jail. Your team wins when all opposing members have been jailed.

This mod has been around since the days of Half-Life 1; Albeit the HL1 mod looked much less childish. One of the smaller details I remember is that, if you are released, or escape on a route without a weapon, you're weapon less until you either steal one of the guards' weapons, or your saviours drop one for you, which helps make it a little interesting to escape- I do not know if this is true in the Source mod.
In case you missed the link above, you can download JailBreak: Source here.

What will we do?

If the European dedicated server I see sometimes is up, we'll join that and we'll start off by playing sortof half seriously the first few times. If that server is not up, I'll just host a listen server. After we've warmed up, we'll kick it off and play for reals until everyone has left, more or less. Keep in mind that while a TDM has no strict player number requirements to be fun, when you add in the jail, at least 3 players per team is when it starts getting fun.

When?

Saturday, 6pm GMT+1. If I have officer status in the NDH group, this will be planned as an event and we'll meet up before hand in the group chatroom. Unfortunately, this first one is members only- But I plan to occasionally have one where any people in the NDH group may join in.

EDIT: Event has been scheduled in the group. Whee! :D
EDIT2: I'd recommend you download and install the mod before the gaming night, to avoid as much trouble on the night as possible. Granted, that's why we meet up in the chatroom beforehand. :P
EDIT3: I'll probably record demos of these nights, and I might be willing to work out a way to put them on the 'tube, so long as noone else minds.
EDIT4: This is the main thread for the events themselves, please keep discussions and questions to other threads, so we keep it relatively tidy in here from here on out.

The JBS night was rather successful, we managed to get 3-5 NDH members into the game and it proved rather fun as long as the teams were balanced. We also had a few random players as I hadn't passworded the listen server. It lasted for 90~ minutes, at which point people started leaving, but me and Gridlock stayed for an hour past that, pretty much. Overall, we'll probably do JBS occasionally- Which reminds me to add a poll of how participants thought about the mod chosen. The more liked, the more often, more or less.

Next mini-night information will arrive within a few days.

Next mininights here!

Team Fortress Halloween Event

You probably know that Team Fortress has a halloween event. So there you go, we're gonna do the Halloween stuff! We're probably gonna play serious for a bit while having fun with the Horseless Headless Horsemann and grabbing paper masks in order to get a Saxton Hale mask and that's pretty much it.

When?

I feel the same time as last night should be perfect, so, 6pm GMT+1, saturday. Not sure if we're gonna play on the NDH server if we can get it to be set up to cp_manor_event without changing, but if nothing else, I have my trusty own server I can start up. And when we tire of Halloween, I have Team Fortress Dodgeball. XP

EDIT: http://www.mediafire.com/?afydugl8cnck9y8 The four team fortress dodgeball maps we'll play on, just in case we'll play on my server. I've not decided yet, but it seems the best option. If you plan on staying for the dodgeball, I highly suggest downloading this rar and putting the .bsp files in your maps folder, as I have no file server, it'll save you 5-10 minutes per map.

T'was successful. We managed to get, at the highest, 13 players in a passworded server. It was great fun the two hours cp_manor managed to entertain us what with masks and horseless horsemen and whatnot. After it started dying I switched to Dodgeball, which we all played for a little bit. Quad and Demon both left relatively quickly, but me, Naga and Grid stayed for slightly longer.
A Dicey is a happy Dicey.

Next mini-night will be announced soon~

It's that time again. I hope. My day/night rhythm is wacky, so if I'm not awake for the event, someone else will have to step up and take charge. We will be playing..

Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West
Because it's a free weekend! Hooray! LaG is a class-based third person shooter set in- You guessed it, the Wild West. Not much else to say to convince you to get to trying it considering it's free.

When?
Sunday, again at 6pm GMT+1. Again, I will put this up as an event in the group.

We'll likely start our own server with a password, last few times I played I saw an enormous amount of snipers abusing map exploits for easy kills. Not fun. NDH only? Eh, don't think so.

It's that time again, and this time I'm sure since my day/night rhythm has been fixed. We will be playing..

Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat
This has been suggested a few times and I figure, why not? This is another Source engine mod, one of those few that you can download directly from the in-game store, just search for Insurgency and you're off. This is a more tactically inclined multiplayer, teambased shooter, with a more realistic theme than TF2, for example. We will first be playing on a passworded listen server that I'll throw up at the time of the event, and after we've warmed up and we know how to play, we might go raid a server.

When?
Sunday, 6pm GMT+1.

Insurgency was a fail. The rather steep learning curve wasn't that bad, but it was terribly unforgiving- Fail to spot that one guy on the edge and he kills you with 1-2 shots. Might have been done easier with larger teams and more communication, but as it stands, we switched over to Jailbreak: Source instead.

This sunday we will be playing...

Hidden: Source
Hidden is rather simple to explain; It pits everyone against someone. Humans have to cooperate and use devices like laser trip alarms to catch the Hidden, who is a genetic experiment and as such much stronger, if I remember correctly. Whichever 'team' dies first loses. Pretty exciting when you have a good number of players, too few makes it too easy for the Hidden and too many makes it a lot harder.

When?
Sunday, 6pm GMT+1, like usual.

Download!

EDIT: Tom, grateful for the download link edit, should be more thorough next time, posts below have met the Remove hammer. :V This is not a discussion topic.

It's been a while, but we're back in business. 83
This saturday, we will play..

Team Fortress 2
I'm pretty sure you already know what this is. We're pretty much going to all raid the same server and if we happen to raid the NDH server we can do things like we did on the larger gaming nights. Hide and seek with pyros against S&D spies and such.

Ideas for activities:
Hide and Seek; Pyros vs Spies (NDH server)
Royal Rumble (Props to Tom for the idea in a different very dead thread; NDH server)
Surfing (Different server)
Dodgeball (My server)

Random silly stuff like building player towers or doing tauntkill chains and so on and so forth.. There's lots that can be done. If you get an idea, send me a message on Steam. :P Most of these non-normal gameplay ideas would have to be done on the NDH server though, to prevent random players joining and ruining everything. And we might need admins for some stuff, too, the Royal Rumble idea, for example, needs to have no team limits and no autobalance. :x

Mini gaming nights have been on a hiatus, only to be brought back from the dead.

Team Fortress 2
We will raid the non-medieval mode NDH server for an hour or two of fun on sunday, 6pm GMT+1. Might try to organize things in the server itself, like playing Hide and Seek with C&D spies or perhaps gather up all players for a killtaunt train or a group screenshot or something, I don't know. We're gonna have fun, if it's fun, it passes.

Yaay!

DIPRIP: Warm Up
DIPRIP, short for 'Die in pain, rest in peace' is a vehicular combat mod for the Source Engine, available straight from your Steam client. We'll be playing this on Sunday at 7pm GMT+1. I only have 90~ minutes on this back when it was new, and the trailer makes it look much more polished now, so I've no idea whatsoever how this night will be. I'll be recording demos, we'll be playing on a listen server I'll host with password.. And that's about it, really.

:O
Most of us seemed to enjoy..
Age of Chivalry

So next sunday, again at an appropriate time, that's what we're playing. I think I'll host the listen server again, but with no password, so we can get random people in there. This is because the other times I've joined the other servers, players have been a bit douchebaggy, and I'd like to keep it family friendly and therefore be able to shove my boot up their -censored-.

Feel free to message me on Steam with suggestions for max playersize. 3v3, like we played last time, was far too little for most maps. We'd need at least 5v5, preferably around 7v7 or so. Thoughts?

We will be playing..
Pirates, Vikings and Knights II
This is another Source mod, and another one available via Steam. This time we'll be playing, again, on my local listen server for warmings up and practice, but here's where we switch it up. When all are for it, we'll kill the server and raid a random online one, so we can get our behinds kicked by people who actually know how to play it.
Saturday 6pm GMT+1, like usual. Watch for event and announcement in the Steam group.

And I'm running out of ideas, now.
Probably because you can't play games you don't have, and we're running out of Source mods to play.
... What if I posted a poll with a few different games that are of popular request, and then you vote for them and we play whichever seems most popular? I know some of you have MW2, for example, and we could play that one week and something else another week. Or something. Message me on Steam if you can think of any new games to play or a way to pick new games or revisit old ones.

Next sunday it's time for..

Fistful of Frags
this is yet another Source mod, though not available through Steam. Click the link above to be taken to their site. We'll be playing on my listen server for warmups, and whenever we feel like it, we go to a public server (If there are players).
6pm GTM+1, like usual.

Now let's see what they have to say for themselves.
"Once upon a time in the West. Fistful of Frags is a first person shooter set in the Old West times. Take part in frenzy team versus shootouts or play cooperative games against AI managed enemies. Most of the classic black powder guns are available, in single or dual wield setup."
There's a tutorial video there. Check that out if you wanna. Like before, watch out for event and announcement on Steam. Server will likely be up 10-20 minutes prior to the night actually starting with me playing around with cvars on it.

EDIT: Mike pointed out it looks like you can only get 3.5 via Desura, moddb and indiedb's own management client, much along the lines of Steam I'd imagine. I can't be bothered to get Desura because of a Source mod, as Steam already serves that purpose (You must have Steam and a downloaded Steam Source game for the mods to work properly) and as such we're gonna be playing 3.1, unless someone can find a patch for 3.5 outside of Desura.

EDIT2: Download, find the client 3.1 -> 3.5 download in that post. The link may be temp. disabled every now and then.
EDIT3: Looks like they've added a full 3.5 installer to Moddb, will save you some hassle if you haven't got it already.

Derp.
This saturday, we'll be playing..

Jailbreak: Source
Most of you should already know what this is by now. If not, scroll up to my first post and have a look.
When? Saturday, at 6pm GMT+1, like always. You can tell I like this time and think it works well, can't you? :P
In the hope that we get 2-6 VGNers with us, we're playing on a passworded listen server hosted by yours truly.
