To clarify:

I obtained the Hat via a random drop. Metal was not used.


It took me a year and 3-4 months to obtain a hat since they were first introduced to the game (someone can double-check the fact). The time I waited was full of pain and rain, but I stood still, waiting for my random drop from Mann Co.

All I say is patience, folks; you'll just lose your metal in the end. Y'all should wait for drops. :P

(And no, I will not craft a hat - it's simply not worth it in my opinion.)

Funny story:

A friend of mine got a stovepipe (which is s**t :P ) with a random drop. A few months later he crafted his first random hat. A stovepipe. Crafted them both to a Heavy Elvis thing.

Now, he crafted a demoman hat with 4 refined and a token. Guess what he got?
