A "Brand New Steam": Massive UI Overhaul
« on: 24 February 2010, 08:47:22 »

More information here.

It looks like the mess with Steam's friendslist was because of this. A massive user interface overhaul.

To quote Valve,
"As of today, a new version of Steam is available through a public opt-in beta, open to all Steam users. This Steam update provides several major upgrades to the platform's core functionality. We've overhauled the Steam user interface to enhance the way you already buy and play games, adding more info about the things that matter — getting games, playing them with friends, and staying current in the gaming world."

Sound promising, yet I have my concerns. I prefer to keep Steam rather minimalistic and I, for one, certainly hope Steam won't evolve into a 'Facebook clone'.

(In somewhat related news, the rage thread on SPUF reached 146 pages. Not too shabby.)
I say this, be ye redy with good hert
To al my wil, and that I frely may
As me best pleaseth do you laughe or smert,
And never ye to murmur, night or day;
And eek whan I say yea, ye say not nay,
Neyther by word, nor frownyng countenaunce?
Swer this, and here I swer our alliaunce.

Hotdamn, that's pretty. Currently no web page will open on any Steam window ever, but it's very pretty. 8D

I tested it for a while and found it terrible.

It was a tad slower than the 'classic UI', although I found the in-game overlay faster despite the amount of information it shows.

In the end I reverted back to the classic UI. Even though the new 'Metro UI'-styled interface might look a little bit better with a custom skin, it doesn't really appeal to me because of the lack of simplicity.

open IE, go to Tools -> Internet Options ->Connections -> LAN Settings, and uncheck "Automatically detect settings," then close and re-open Steam.

One big thing that is not directly noticable about this update:
Steam now uses the WebKit render engine instead of the IE one. Webkit is used in Safari and Chrome, and is the fastest render engine around. While the IE (6!) engine is one of the slowest, it will make a huge performance impact ;) .

Gj Valve!!

Then again, you can only see the difference when viewing the Store or the Community, right? Everything else was slower for me.

True, although its just a Beta, so i guess the final will be faster. Also the ingame browser is faster, which is pretty nice :) .

Weird, the new UI seems to be a lot faster for me than the old not-always-so-responsive version.
