TF2: Guide:FPS

Guide to getting more FPS

Info:First of all, this is a guide for those that have low fps in tf2(less than 60).
This guide will have you download a fps config and teach you how to use it.
I hope you enjoy it.

Step 1:Ok first of all you want to download "Quantums Little Config v2.1"
Download link -> http://www.dieall.de/da2008/index.php?mod=files&action=download&where=42&target=1

Step 2: Go ahead, and install the config. "Warning This will change both your menu and your autoexec.cfg"
If you want you can download the zip file, instead.
Download link -> http://www.dieall.de/da2008/index.php?mod=files&action=download&where=43&target=1

Step 3: Ok, so you got the files, now it is time to learn how to use it.
Note: I will only go over the parts of the config that will have to do with you framerate.

Ok, go ahead and open up the folder steamapps/"yourusername"/team fortress 2/tf/cfg/Quantum.cfg

When you have opened this folder, go ahead and open up the MainConfig.cfg
Open it with notepad.

Now you will see a lot of text, and it actually explains how it works.
But since you might find it a bit hard, I will do my best to let you improve your framerate and dont have to think about all the other stuff.

Step 4: Ok, you have got the cfg file opened.
Scroll down till you see:

// Choose your DirectX Modus
//----------------------------
// This is selected by TF2 automaticly.
// If you use DX 8.0/8.1, it normaly brings you more FPS, but it depends on the used GraphicCard.
// Beware of the greater Qualityloss and on some PC with this config could crash InGame.
// If it crash, try to deactivate the CacheSettings, this helps for me.
// Activate the Modus you want to try.

// QLC_DirectX_8.0;         echo " DirectX Modus 8.0"
// QLC_DirectX_8.1;         echo " DirectX Modus 8.1"
// QLC_DirectX_9.0;         echo " DirectX Modus 9.0"
// QLC_DirectX_9.5;         echo " DirectX Modus 9.5"
//----------------------------

This is the part of the config were you choose what directX you are going to use.
I personally use 8.1, So if you want more fps that is what I would recommend.
So choose the one you want.
Do this by remove "//" infront of the text.
Example:

// Choose your DirectX Modus
//----------------------------
// This is selected by TF2 automaticly.

// QLC_DirectX_8.0;         echo " DirectX Modus 8.0"
QLC_DirectX_8.1;         echo " DirectX Modus 8.1"
// QLC_DirectX_9.0;         echo " DirectX Modus 9.0"
// QLC_DirectX_9.5;         echo " DirectX Modus 9.5"
//----------------------------

Step 5: Ok, now you scroll down till you see:

// Choose your Image Quality
//----------------------------
// Uncomment this if you want to increase your FPS at all cost ... i got still nightmares from this settings ... but some out there in the community want this kind of stuff.
// QLC_UltraHighFPS

// Uncomment this if you want to increase your FPS and sacrifice the ImageQuality with a good tradeoff
// QLC_HighFPS

// Uncomment this if you want to increase your ImageQuality and sacrifice your FPS
// QLC_HighQuality

Same thing here. remove the "//" from the option you want.
For the most fps, you choose QLC_UltraHighFPS.
For almost as much fps, but a bit better quality you choose QLC_HighFPS.
If you for some reason is reading this guide and want a tf2 that is maxed out, you choose QLC_HighQuality.

Example:

// Choose your Image Quality
//----------------------------
// Uncomment this if you want to increase your FPS at all cost ... i got still nightmares from this settings ... but some out there in the community want this kind of stuff.
QLC_UltraHighFPS

// Uncomment this if you want to increase your FPS and sacrifice the ImageQuality with a good tradeoff
// QLC_HighFPS

// Uncomment this if you want to increase your ImageQuality and sacrifice your FPS
// QLC_HighQuality

Note: Dont copy paste this over, since the lines of text might get seperated and cause a few errors. But rather just change the text in the cfg.

Ok, now you can go ahead and press save.(Ctrl + S)
Now you should be ready, try launching tf2, and see how many fps you get.
If you want to know how many fps you have. You can either press on it inn the tweaked menu.
Or type cl_showfps 1 in console

Hope this has helped. and if you got any questions that you think I can answer ask here in this post, else you should post it here: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=987466

Well I guess that sums it up.

Might I add that checking that your core affinity is set to both on hl2.exe is smart.

Launch TF2, open the task manager(CTRL+ALT+DEL) , go to processes, right click on hl2.exe and press 'set processor affinity'. Then make sure both cores are selected.

If not, unless you want to do it every time you start TF2, download Set Affinity II.

Mind you, Vista and Seven set it to use both cores automatically.
I say this, be ye redy with good hert
To al my wil, and that I frely may
As me best pleaseth do you laughe or smert,
And never ye to murmur, night or day;
And eek whan I say yea, ye say not nay,
Neyther by word, nor frownyng countenaunce?
Swer this, and here I swer our alliaunce.

aye if only it worked better with the source engine for my setup I'd be sorted.

I can run Crysis on medium settings but TF2 runs at 20FPS in DX9 mode on my setup when I have DX10 card in my laptop with 256 memory and a duel core 2GHZ setup with 4 gigs of ram.

I was getting 20FPS when anything happened on screen but 120FPS in spawn.  I installed quantums little config and its gone up to 120FPS all the time but I have to run it in DX8 mode with most of the settings down.

TBH, the game needs a lot of optimising if it can't run properly on the above setup given what goes on in the game.  I know there are lots of subtle things going on but if they are that subtle, let me turn them off :(

Maybe, plans to build a proper gaming machine for myself in a couple of months so I can run TF2 on full settings and not burn my balls off :D

Just download m0re's fps config and/or m0re's HUD.

It's anything you need :) .

The hud is ok, but his config doesnt work all that well.
1: The player models gets very white. This makes it both look very bad, and it makes it hard to see what color they has.
2: m0re's config gives you a little less performance.
3: With quantums config, you can also go ahead and choose options. like I want to do a movie of tf2, so I will change it to highquality instead.
If you had m0re's config, you would have to revert all the cvars he had set, and then max it, using either the normal or hidden settings.

mat_bumpmap 1 or just use directx 8.1
